Kipps Lane apartment fire sends one to hospital

One person was taken to hospital after an apartment fire in northeast London.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at 750 Kipps Lane north of Huron Street around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Flames and smoke could be seen coming from the fourth floor when firefighters arrived, the London Fire Department said on social media.

A tenant suffered unknown injuries and was taken to hospital. A firefighter who slipped on ice while battling the blaze suffered a minor injury and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Damages are estimated at $100,000.

Fire investigators determined the cause of the blaze was from careless smoking.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
