Coach ejected from Simcoe arena for throwing stick at referee

A minor hockey coach had to be escorted by police from a Simcoe arena after a hockey stick was thrown at a referee.

Norfolk OPP were called about a disturbance at Talbot Gardens Arena on Talbot Street North just before 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

"It was determined that a coach became engaged in a verbal altercation and then threw a hockey stick on the ice towards a referee which then came close to other players," police said in a statement released on Friday.

A roughly 30 second video of the incident posted to social media by Smart Sports Network shows a man pick an item up off the ice and throw it in the direction of a referee. It is unclear whether it makes contact. The man then proceeds to casually walk off the ice as spectators shout at him from the stands to "get out of the arena." The referee follows the man before they have a short verbal exchange as the video cuts off.

Police said officers escorted an individual from the arena.

No injuries were reported and no charges have been laid.
