St. Thomas Police officer cleared by SIU after overdose

A police officer in St. Thomas has been cleared of any wrongdoing, after a man in custody died due to a drug overdose.

On December 9th of last year, a 29-year-old man was arrested for driving while impaired by drugs at a parking lot on Chestnut Street. The man was arrested and admitted to officers he had used cocaine before driving, and did not show any signs of any medical issues.

He was taken to St. Thomas Police headquarters, and within the hour fell into medical distress and police called an ambulance.

The man later died in hospital.

Three officers were interviewed by the Special Investigations Unit, and on Wednesday, it was announced they have no reason to believe that the officer involved had "transgressed the limits of care prescribed by the criminal law".

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
