Charges laid in newborn's death after unassisted home birth

A St. Thomas woman has been charged in the death of her newborn child after what police call an "unassisted home birth."

Detectives with the St. Thomas police criminal investigations branch launched a lengthy investigation following the death in June 2021.

On Wednesday, it was announced a 37-year-old woman had been taken into custody without incident the previous day. She is charged with failing to provide the necessities of life.

Police did not release the woman's name.

She has been released from custody with a future court date.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
