UPDATE: Severe thunderstorm watch ended

UPDATE: A severe thunderstorm watch is no longer in-effect.

A system moving through the area Monday evening has the potential to create a severe thunderstorm capable of causing damage in some areas.

Just after 6:30 p.m., Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for areas in Chatham-Kent, Western Middlesex County and West Elgin County. It was since cancelled for Chatham-Kent and West Elgin.

As of 6:50 p.m., the storm is tracking southwest of London, near Glencoe, at about 45 kilometres per hour.

The weather agency says this system is capable of producing strong wind gusts, pea to dime size hail and heavy rain. The watch will only be updated to a warning if thunderstorms are imminent or begin to occur or are producing hazards such as large hail, damaging winds and torrential rainfall.

As of early Monday evening, most of southwestern Ontario remains under a special weather statement due to significant rain predicted to move through overnight and into Tuesday.
