London teen charged after attempted carjacking

London police have charged an 18-year-old man after an attempted carjacking in the city's east end on Thursday.

On Wednesday, police say a London man was contacted by a possible buyer regarding a vehicle he had posted for sale on an online buy-and-sell site. The owner arranged a meeting for the following day in east London.

On Thursday, the owner and a family member accompanied the potential buyer and his female friend while he took the car for a test drive. The suspect reportedly proceeded to speed into oncoming traffic while driving east on Trafalgar Street near Highbury Avenue. Police say the accused then ran a red light facing his direction which led to a collision in the intersection.

After the crash, police say the suspect and his female companion got out of the car and tried to take off. The teen reportedly went on to try and open the doors of several vehicles with no success, before he managed to get one open. He is accused of trying to physically remove the driver when citizens in the area came over and apprehended him.

Police arrived and arrested the teen at around 4:50 p.m. No one was hurt during the incident.

Following an investigation, an 18-year-old London man has been charged with dangerous operation, failing to stop at the scene of a crash, robbery and assault with intent to steal and driving without a licence.

The teen remains in police custody and was scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
