A Sarnia businessman is being fondly remembered for his love of aviation.

An obituary posted on www.smithfuneralhome.ca said John Allan Shelley Jr., 65, died in a plane crash on Tuesday, August 23.

The 1941 Grumman G-44 Widgeon Aircraft he was piloting crashed in an open field near the Stratford Municipal Airport just after 9 a.m.

The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) deployed a team of investigators and is assessing the incident.

John Allan Shelley Jr. was General Manager of the family business Shelley Machine and Marine on Plank Road since 2009.

In a tweet Tuesday, the Sarnia Lambton Chamber of Commerce said John Shelley was no stranger to the community, and will be missed by many.
