Charge laid in crash that killed motorcyclist

Provincial police in Elgin County say charges have now been laid in a collision that claimed the life of a motorcyclist from Port Stanley.

Nicholas Cheeseman, 34, died after his motorcycle and an SUV collided at the intersection of Elm Street and Coulter Avenue in St. Thomas on the night of July 28, 2022.

The driver of the SUV wasn't hurt.

On Tuesday, police announced that a 70-year-old St. Thomas man is now charged with careless driving causing death.

He is to appear in court in St. Thomas at a later date.

The collision that killed Cheeseman happened on the same day West Region OPP held a news conference about an “alarming” rise in fatal motorcycle collisions.

“The numbers we are seeing in 2022 are, quite frankly, very alarming,” Inspector Shawn Johnson, West Region OPP’s traffic and marine manager said at the time. “Half way through the summer, we are on track to set a record year and that is just unacceptable and we can’t allow that to happen.”
