Security guard threatened with hammer

A 45-year-old London man is accused of shoplifting several items from a north-end business and then using a hammer to threaten a security guard who tried to stop the theft.

According to London police, a man walked into the unnamed business in the area of Fanshawe Park Road East and Adelaide Street North around 8:50 a.m. Monday and began putting items in a cart. The man is alleged to have tried to conceal the items before leaving the store without paying.

When a security guard tried to stop the man outside of the store, the man pulled out a hammer and made threats, police said.

The man then took off from the area on a bicycle.

The security guard was not physically hurt.

Police were called and a man was arrested nearby.

All of the stolen items were recovered, police said.

A London man, 45, is charged with robbery. He is scheduled to appear in London court on December 5.
