London man sentenced in death of Sarnia woman

A London man has been sentenced to seven years in prison in the death of a Sarnia woman more than two years ago.

Justice Bruce Thomas handed down his decision to Owen Clarke, 36, Monday from the Sarnia courthouse.

Clarke was initially charged with first degree murder in April 2020 in the death of 29-year-old Sarah Thwaites. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter in June, 2022.

Sarnia police said Thwaites, a mother of two young children, was the victim of a “vicious assault” in a home near Cobden Street and Palmerston Street on March 13, 2020.  She was rushed to hospital, but died of her injuries. Clarke was arrested and charged roughly six weeks later following an investigation.

Clarke was credited with 1,376 days served, leaving a remaining three years and two months on his sentence. He also received a lifetime weapons prohibition order and a DNA order.
