St. Thomas cop charged after SIU probe

An investigation by Ontario's police oversight agency has led to a charge being laid against a St. Thomas police officer.

The Special Investigations Unit was called to St. Thomas on September 1 after the arrest and injury of a man who was wanted on several arrest warrants. The 29-year-old man was seen by officers, but took off on a bicycle. He eventually dropped the bike and ran. Officers caught up to the man and arrested him.

"The male person sustained an injury during his arrest," police said. "As a result, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified and invoked their investigative mandate."

Constable Sean James is now charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm.

Police say James will remain on active duty as a Canine handler while the case moves through the courts.
