Charges laid in pair of Woodstock fires

A 49-year-old Aurora man is facing arson charges after two fires, a month apart, at the same home in Woodstock.

Woodstock police were originally called about a suspicious fire at the home in the area of Guysborough Drive and Dorchester Court just before 2 a.m. on October 11. According to police, a man was seen pouring a liquid onto two vehicles parked in the driveway of the home. He is alleged to have lit the liquid on fire before taking off from the scene in a small sedan.

The fire caused approximately $200,000 in damage to the vehicles, garage, and driveway, police said.

Then on November 12, a second suspicious fire was set at the home.

The investigation led police to conduct searches in Aurora and St. Thomas late last month. A 49-year-old man was arrested.

He has since been charged with two counts of arson and five counts of arson with disregard for human life.

The investigation is ongoing, police said. They are asking anyone with information to call Detective Constable Mutsaers at 519-421-2800 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
