A 32-year-old London man is facing multiple charges after a police officer was assaulted during a traffic stop near Clarke Road and Dundas Street.
On Wednesday, a London police officer initiated a traffic stop along Clarke Road. The officer reportedly discovered that the driver was in breach of a court-imposed condition and was wanted on outstanding warrants.
After being told that he was being placed under arrest, police say that the driver began acting erratically, prompting the officer to call for assistance. Police say the man then resisted arrest, “grabb[ing] at one of the officer’s belt and vest, ripping the police-issued radio off his belt.” An officer used a taser on the man and he was placed in the back of a police car.
Once inside the cruiser, police say the man kicked at the window, causing substantial damage to the door frame. In total, damages to the police cruiser were estimated at $4,500.
The suspect and one officer sustained minor injuries which did not require medical attention.
The man has been charged with the following offenses:
• Resisting arrest; • Assaulting a peace officer; • Mischief under $5000; • Causing a disturbance by fighting/shouting/swearing; and • Failing to comply with a release order.
The accused was scheduled to appear in a London courtroom Thursday.
