Watermain repairs lead to lane closures on Oxford Street

The effort to fix a leaky watermain is expected to cause traffic headaches in east London for much of the week.

The City of London is advising drivers that Oxford Street East between Gammage and Elliott streets will have lane restrictions from Monday to Thursday. The lane restrictions are being put in place to allow crews to repair a watermain leak at 734 Oxford Street East.

"Drivers travelling eastbound and westbound on Oxford Street East are advised to expect delays and are encouraged to use alternative routes where possible," the city said in a statement issued Monday morning.

While sidewalk access will be maintained throughout the repair work, pedestrians are asked to follow signage and use nearby streets to get where they are going in the area.

Businesses will remain open and accessible while the work is completed, the city added.
