Power outages closes Port Burwell elementary school

It's an unexpected day off for elementary students in Port Burwell.

The Thames Valley District School Board has announced Port Burwell Public School will be closed for the day Friday.

The closure is due to a power outage that is affecting roughly a 1,000 homes and businesses in the Lake Erie community.

"The safety of all students, staff, and community members is a priority and decisions related to school closures are not made lightly," the school board said in a statement issued just after 7 a.m.

Students can choose to learn independently online by accessing their classroom's digital platform.

The power outage comes as winds have been gusting around 70 km/h, the tail end of a system that dumped more than 22 mm of rain across southwestern Ontario.

Hydro One estimates power will be restored to the Port Burwell area around noon.
