Fire closes section of Wellington Road in south London

Emergency services are responding to a fire near a busy intersection in London's south end.

On Saturday afternoon, police first alerted the public via Twitter that Wellington Road was closed between Southdale Road and Commissioners Road for an active fire investigation. Drivers were asked to avoid the area.

Just before 2:30 p.m., a spokesperson from the London Police Service confirmed the Wellington Road road closure had been contained to the area between Southdale Road and Wilkins Street.

At the time, the London Fire Department was still working to extinguish the fire and uniformed police officers remained on scene conducting traffic control.

The northbound lanes reopened shortly before 3 p.m., but southbound lanes remained closed.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined.
