SIU investigating after London man hurt during arrest

The province's police watchdog is probing a weekend arrest by London police that left a 23-year-old man hurt.

London police were called about a man damaging a vehicle in the area of Ridout Street South and Craig Street around 4:15 a.m. on Sunday. When officers arrived they found a male suspect.

"An assault on another individual was witnessed," police said.

The man was arrested and during what police have called an "interaction" with officers suffered a non-life threatening injury. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

A 23-year-old man has been charged with assault, mischief, and possession of a weapon. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 18.

Due to the injury, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified and has invoked its mandate.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
