Driver who ran after 401 crash charged with impaired

Provincial police believe impaired driving was a factor in a crash that caused slowdowns on Highway 401 during the Thursday morning commute.

Two vehicles collided in the eastbound lanes of the highway at Elgin Road (Highway 73) around 5:30 a.m.

One of the drivers of the involved vehicles took off running, Middlesex OPP said. That individual was arrested with the help of a person who was passing by at the time.

A 20-year-old Woodstock resident has since been charged with dangerous driving, impaired driving, failure to stop after an accident, and failure or refusal to comply with demand. The accused has been released from police custody and is expected to appear in court on August 14.

No injuries were reported.

The crash slowed the three eastbound lanes for just over an hour.
