Charges laid after stolen vehicle abandoned on 401

A 34-year-old man is facing charges after a person parked a stolen vehicle along Highway 401 near Dutton-Dunwich and took off running.

An Elgin OPP officer spotted the vehicle, which had been reported stolen from the Waterloo region, heading west on the busy highway just after 1:20 p.m. on Monday.

In an attempt to get away from police, the driver allegedly stopped the vehicle on the median shoulder near the eastbound On Route Service Centre and ran to a nearby property.

Officers with the OPP west region emergency response team, canine unit and an OPP aircraft were used to help search for the man. A suspect was located and arrested without further incident near the intersection of Marsh Line and Dunborough Road, police said.

A Kitchener man has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, dangerous driving, and driving while prohibited. He is scheduled to appear in St. Thomas court on August 22.

Police are thanking witnesses whose tips about suspicious activity in the area helped officers make an arrest.

"As a direct result, officers were able to safely locate and take the individual into custody," OPP said.
