Butane spill leads to small explosion in St. Thomas

Spilled butane and an unaware smoker were behind a small explosion that caused minor injuries in St. Thomas.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics were called to the blast at a home on St. Catherines Street last Friday.

Investigators determined one of the residents had spilled butane while refilling a lighter. It was ignited when another resident, who was unaware of the chemical spill, lit a cigarette in the same area.

Minor injuries were reported.

The home did not sustain any major damage, police said.
