Driver charged with impaired offences after Hwy. 401 crash

Impaired driving charges have been laid in a single-vehicle collision that slowed the morning commute earlier this week on Highway 401 west of London.

A pickup truck crashed into the centre median cable guardrail in the eastbound lanes of the highway near Iona Road around 7 a.m. Monday.

No injuries were reported. However, the crash caused traffic to back up in the area during the busy morning commute.

The driver of the pickup failed a roadside breath test and was taken into custody, Elgin County OPP said. Further testing for impairment was done at the local police detachment.

A 52-year-old West Lorne man has since been charged with six offences including impaired driving, driving with a blood alcohol concentration 80 plus, driving while under suspension, driving with cannabis readily available, and operating a vehicle without insurance.

The man was issued an automatic 90-day driver's licence suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment. He is scheduled to appear in St. Thomas court October 3.
