SIU probing St. Thomas driver's injury during arrest

The province's police watchdog is investigating after a driver was seriously hurt during a traffic stop in St. Thomas.

St. Thomas police were conducting the traffic stop in the city around 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday when the driver got out of his vehicle and allegedly tried to run from officers.

The man suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries as a "result of the interaction" with officers, police said.

After being arrested, the man was taken to hospital for treatment.

No other details about the incident have been released.

Due to the injury, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified and has invoked its mandate.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
