Charges laid after loaded gun, drugs seized

A loaded gun and drugs were seized after a vehicle that rolled through a sobriety checkpoint in Southwest Middlesex crashed.

According to Middlesex OPP, the incident started when a driver failed to stop at a R.I.D.E. program set-up on Hagerty Road just after 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

Officers patrolling the area later found the vehicle in a ditch on Cameron Road in Lambton County. A person from the vehicle was seen tossing away an item near the scene of the crash, police said.

The police canine unit was brought in to help search for evidence. That search turned up an undisclosed quantity of illegal drugs and a loaded handgun. Police did not release an estimated street value of the drugs seized.

A 35-year-old Welland resident and a 20-year-old Calgary woman were arrested. They each face nearly a dozen charges including possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and carrying a firearm in a careless manner.

The 35-year-old is additionally charged with careless driving.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
