Newfoundland sex assault suspect nabbed during St. Thomas traffic stop

A random traffic stop in St. Thomas netted police a 44-year-old who was wanted by the RCMP in Newfoundland for a sexual assault.

Officers stopped the vehicle in the city on Tuesday.

It was determined the driver, a 44-year-old St. Thomas resident, was under suspension and was prohibited from driving. Through further investigation, police learned the same individual had an outstanding arrest warrant in Newfoundland.

The 44-year-old had previously been charged by way of warrant with two counts each of sexual assault, sexual interference, and exposure of genitals. The charges relate to an incident that took place in Newfoundland. No other details about that assault were released.

The accused has additionally been charged with one count each of driving while under suspension, driving while prohibited, and taking a motor vehicle without consent. The person, whose name has not been released, has been remanded into custody.

Arrangements are being made to transfer them back to the custody of the RCMP to answer to the Newfoundland charges.
