SIU probing London break-in suspect's injury

The province's police watchdog is probing the injury of a 32-year-old break-in suspect in London's west-end.

London police were called to a home on Applegreen Grove around 2:15 a.m. on Thursday after a man broke-in and stole several items including keys, clothing, tools, and a bicycle.

The family was home and asleep at the time. However, one of them woke up to see the robber leaving. That person called the police.

Officers located a suspect a short distance away on Commissioners Road West and while trying to arrest him, the man resisted.

After finally taking the man into custody, officers discovered he had a serious, non-life threatening injury. The man was taken to hospital where he was treated for the unspecified injury. The man is charged with break and enter and theft, obstructing a peace officer, possession of break-in instruments, and unlawfully possessing drugs. He remains in police custody.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified due to the injury and has invoked its mandate.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
