SIU probing London break-in suspect's serious injury

The province's police watchdog is investigating after a break-in suspect was bitten by a London police dog over the weekend.

Police were called about the break and enter at a Power Street business in the east end of the city around 2 a.m. on Saturday. Two suspects were spotted on video surveillance inside the property, police said.

Officers with the uniform division and canine unit arrived at the business and began tracking the suspects on foot. A 55-year-old suspect was located by a police dog which bit him before his arrest. The man was taken to hospital for treatment of serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Due to the suspect's injury, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified and has invoked its mandate.

Anyone with information, including video or photos, of the incident are asked to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529 or siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
