Cyclist seriously hurt in crash involving London police cruiser

A collision involving a London police cruiser has left a cyclist with serious injuries.

The police officer was driving in the area of York and William streets, just east of the downtown when their cruiser collided with a bicycle around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The cyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries. They have since been released.

The collision kept York at William closed in both directions for several hours. The area was reopened by Friday morning.

As the incident involved a police officer, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified and has invoked its mandate.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.

This is the second collision in which a pedestrian was seriously hurt in London this month. Last Friday, a cyclist was hit by an SUV on Wharncliffe Road South between Riverside Drive to Becher Street.
