London police cleared in September drug overdose

Ontario's law-enforcement oversight agency has ended its investigation into an overdose suffered by a man while in London police custody.

On September 1, London officers arrested a 31-year-old man on an alleged violation of a conditional sentence order. After being searched twice at the scene of the arrest, police found a glass pipe.

The man denied having used drugs, but he was later found in his cell unresponsive. It turned out that the man had concealed fentanyl on himself and had used it.

Officers performed CPR and delivered several doses of naloxone, and paramedics rushed the man to hospital. He eventually recovered.

With the illness occurring while in police custody, London police contacted the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which invoked its mandate.

SIU Director Joseph Martino said Friday that there was no evidence of criminal wrongdoing by the officers. The investigation is now closed.
