Traffic stop leads to seizure of loaded gun, drugs

A London teen is among two people charged after a loaded gun and a variety of drugs were seized during a traffic stop in the east-end of the city.

The vehicle was stopped after a London police officer reportedly saw the driver commit a traffic violation in the area of Hydro Street and Hamilton Road around 1 p.m. on Thursday. While speaking with the driver, the officer spotted drugs inside the vehicle, police said.

A search of the vehicle turned up a loaded Glock 29 10 mm handgun, ammunition, including three spent casings, a prohibited switchblade, 1148 grams of suspected carfentanil, 141 grams of suspected cocaine, six TEC tablets, 60 millilitres of codeine, and $1,589 cash.

The driver and a passenger were arrested and the vehicle seized.

A 24-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy, both from London, have been charged with eight offences including possession of a loaded regulated firearm, possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon, occupying a motor vehicle with firearm, possession of a restricted firearm without a licence, careless storage of a weapon, and possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking. The pair were scheduled to appear in London court in relation to the charges on Friday.

Police are not releasing the name of the man as doing so could potentially identify the teen whose name cannot be released due to his age.

The investigation has been turned over to the police guns and gangs unit, which is continuing to investigate.
