Byron house fire causes $200K damage

Damage is pegged at $200,000 after a fire broke out inside a home in Byron.

London firefighters were called to the home at 823 Griffith Street, just east of Boler Road on Monday morning. When crews arrived thick smoke was coming from the attached garage.

Firefighters took an offensive strategy to contain and extinguish the fire. They also rescued a cat from inside the home.

"Three occupants were able to safely evacuate the home at the time of the fire because of working smoke alarms and a fire escape plan," fire officials added.

Boler Road between Griffith Street and Optimist Park Drive was temporarily closed while crews worked to douse the flames. The road was reopened shortly before 1 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to fire officials.
