Caution near waterways advised

People and pets are being warned to stay off of frozen bodies of water and to be extremely careful around moving water.

The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) warns that with warmer temperatures and wet weather in the forecast, any ice cover will be weakened and unstable. Fluctuating water levels, slippery river and creek beds, and cold, fast-moving water also pose a serious hazard.

The London area is expected to see peak water levels on Friday morning.

The UTRCA doesn't expect serious flooding, but water may spill over the banks in low-lying areas.

Water levels will remain elevated over the weekend and into next week.

The Conservation Authority said that it will will operate its flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock Conservation Areas to reduce the potential of downstream flooding.
