Two kayakers rescued from fast-moving Elgin County creek

Two kayakers had to be rescued from a fast moving, flooded creek southeast of Aylmer over the weekend.

Emergency crews received a distress call about the kayakers whose vessels had capsized in Otter Creek, just east of Dennis Road in the Municipality of Bayham just after 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Two of the kayakers clung to a log in the frigid water for approximately 30 minutes until they were pulled out by Bayham Fire and Emergency Services. A third kayaker was able to safely swim to shore.

The two rescued were assessed by paramedics at the scene.

The incident came at a time when the Long Point Conservation Authority, as well as many other area conservation authorities, were warning people to stay away from waterways as the recent rain and mild temperatures were making them incredibly dangerous.

The word of warning to people considering heading out onto the water was echoed by Elgin OPP.

"Don't take unnecessary risks with your life, or those whose job it is to save you," said Constable Brett Phair.

He added that people who choose to go boating in this weather should wear an immersion or survival suit and pack other lifesaving equipment required by law.
