Cat killed in $500K east London house fire

A house fire in London's Trafalgar Heights neighbourhood has killed a cat and caused $500,000 damage.

Neighbours called 911 to report the fire at 178 Saddy Ave., northeast of the intersection of Gore and Clarke roads just after 1 a.m. on Wednesday. When firefighters arrived flames and thick smoke were coming from the front of the home and required an aggressive offensive attack to keep the blaze from spreading to nearby properties.

Twenty-eight firefighters and seven fire trucks were needed to extinguish the blaze.

One resident of the home escaped unharmed and no injuries were reported. A pet cat died in the fire, according to fire officials.

Damage to the home is pegged at $500,000. A neighbouring home and fence also sustained heat damage.

Fire inspectors are expected to be on scene throughout the day working to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
