Man with knife tasered by police in Newbury

A disturbance in Newbury ended with provincial police officers tasering a man who allegedly was wielding a knife.

Officers with the OPP's canine unit and emergency response team were called to an address in the village in Southwest Middlesex around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

When police arrived they saw a man running from the property with an "edged weapon" in his hand. A taser was deployed and the man was arrested. He was taken to hospital as a precaution, police said.

A 39-year-old Southwest Middlesex man is charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of a prohibited device or ammunition. He has been released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in court in relation to the charges on May 6.
