St. Thomas police officer assaulted while arresting wanted 28-year-old

A 28-year-old St. Thomas resident is accused of assaulting a police officer over the weekend.

St. Thomas police were notified on Sunday about the whereabouts of a person who was wanted on an outstanding warrant for theft under $5,000, mischief, and failure to comply with a release order and probation. Those charges stem from an unspecified incident earlier this month.

Police located the person and advised them of the charges. However, when officers tried to take the individual into custody, they allegedly became combative. An officer was pushed and nearly hit, police said.

No injuries were reported.

The person was arrested and taken to police headquarters. They are additionally charged with one count each of assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest, and failure to comply with probation. The 28-year-old remains in custody, awaiting a court appearance.
