Unattended cooking fire sends adult, two kids to hospital

Three people, including two children, were taken to hospital after an apartment fire in south London.

Fire crews were called to the three-storey walk-up at 70 Emery Street West, near Winston Avenue around 9:20 p.m. on Tuesday.

"We had crews on the street already with another call that was unrelated, so it was a quick response time," said London Fire Department Platoon Chief Brent Shea. "However, when they showed up there was heavy smoke and flames [coming from the building] visible from the road."

A London Transit bus was brought in to shelter tenants temporarily displaced by the blaze.

An adult and two children, who lived in the unit where the fire broke out, were taken to hospital - the adult with minor smoke inhalation and the kids as a precaution. They have all since been released.

Damage, which was predominantly contained to one unit, is estimated at $50,000.

Fire prevention investigators determined the cause of the fire was unattended cooking.

"Unattended cooking is the number one cause of fires in London. Please never leave your stovetop if you're working in the kitchen and ensure the burners to your stovetop are off when not in use," said Shea.
