Vacationing Woodstock resident returns to find intruders in home

Two people are facing charges after a Woodstock resident returned from vacation to find two strangers living in their home.

The homeowner made the discovery at the Rathbourne Avenue house just after 11 p.m. on Monday and called 911. While the intruders were gathering their possessions they claimed to the homeowner that they had recently purchased the property.

The pair then took off running. They were arrested by Woodstock police about 20 minutes later.

A 44-year-old from Woodstock and a 26-year-old from Stratford are each charged with breaking and entering a dwelling to commit an indictable offence and failure to comply with a probation order.

Police did not specify how long the pair had been living in the home, but are offering tips on how residents can keep their property safe when away. Police advise homeowners not to publicly share online when they will be away and to have a trusted family member or friend look in on the home. It is also suggested people keep an eye on their neighbour's property and report any suspicious activity.
