'I am blessed': London man wins $50K

A London retiree got something extra special for Valentine's Day, but it wasn't from his wife.

Nelson Highfield claimed one of 20 guaranteed $50,000 prizes in the February 14 Lotto 6/49 draw.

"I always play the same numbers that consist of significant family dates," Highfield said while picking up his winnings recently from the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto. "I checked my ticket at the store. When I saw the big winner screen, I thought 'wow'. I handed the ticket to the clerk, and his eyes went wide when he scanned it."

Highfield said his wife didn't initially believe him when he told her of the windfall.

He plans to use the five-figure win to make life more enjoyable, starting with a celebratory dinner with his family.

"I have a wonderful life, an incredible family, and I won the lottery. I am blessed," Highfield said.

The winning ticket was purchased at Petro Canada on Southdale Road in London.
