Students displaced by fire near Fanshawe College

Half a dozen students have been displaced by a house fire near Fanshawe College.

The blaze broke out on Prosperity Court, south of Fleming Drive shortly before 10:15 p.m. on Monday. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the home.

"I had crews that were doing fire attack on the exterior and then other crews who entered the home for search, fire, and rescue, along with interior fire attack," said London Fire Department Platoon Chief Kirk Loveland.

No injuries were reported.

Working smoke alarms alerted the tenants to the fire early, allowing them time to escape safely, Loveland said.

The Red Cross was contact and is assisting the six displaced students.

Fire investigators determined the fire started on the exterior of the home and extended into the roof. The cause is not considered to be suspicious.

"We can't rule out carelessly discarded smoking materials [as the cause]," said Loveland. "That is a possibility. We know it started on the exterior where there was garbage."

Damage is estimated between $400,000 to $500,000.
