If you're planning a backyard fireworks display this Victoria Day long weekend, the city wants you to remember it's only legal to ignite them on one day out of the three.
Under Fireworks Bylaw PW-11, fireworks can only be discharged in London between dusk and 11 p.m. on Victoria Day, Canada Day, Diwali, and the Lunar New Year.
"Fireworks are permitted exclusively on Monday, May 20, from sundown until 11 p.m. in celebration of Victoria Day," said Mayor Josh Morgan. "Let's ensure our festivities are safe and respectful by adhering to these regulations. Any unauthorized fireworks display will be met with enforcement measures and potential fines.”
London's fireworks bylaw has been in effect since 2016. It was amended last year to add Diwali and the Lunar New Year to the days consumer products can be discharged.
Private displays can not be discharged on a street, square, school, or public space without a permit, under the bylaw
Safety should also be top of mind for anyone planning a backyard show.
"We are advising anyone who’s planning to host a backyard fireworks display, to ensure there is a safe and adequate distance away from any structures or trees, to take every safety precaution and be sure to follow the directions on fireworks packaging,” said London Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Matt Hepditch. “Only adults over the age of 18 who are aware of the hazards and exercising caution should handle and discharge fireworks.”
Additionally, the fire department recommends keeping a hose or pail of water nearby, lighting only one firework at a time, never trying to relight a dud, and keeping onlookers a safe distance away.
Fire officials and municipal bylaw officers will be enforcing the bylaw throughout the weekend. Noise complaints related to fireworks after hours or on days when not permitted can be made by calling 519-661-5670. An exact address of where the fireworks are being discharged is needed.
Should a fire ignite or someone get hurt in a fireworks mishap 911 should be called immediately.
