OPP warn of new scam in Oxford County

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are warning the public of a new scam being reported in Oxford County.

Police are investigating a fraud involving a resident of Tillsonburg and an individual claiming to be with the Readers Digest Sweepstakes.

According to police, the caller told the victim they had won the $5 million grand prize, $250,000 cash, and a 2024 pickup truck, then asked the victim to buy a prepaid MasterCard to cover the tax before receiving the prize.

Police said that when the victim questioned the legitimacy of the operation, the caller emailed documents in support of the scam.

The fraud occurred between May 14 and May 17.

The victim lost around $900 to the scammer.

Police want to remind the public that legitimate businesses, charities, and organizations will not ask for payment in gift cards.
