Oxford, Norfolk counties under severe thunderstorm watch

Severe thunderstorms packing strong winds, heavy rain, and large hail could hit areas to the east of London on Wednesday afternoon.

Environment Canada has Oxford County, Woodstock, Tillsonburg, and Norfolk County under a severe thunderstorm watch.

The thunderstorms could develop along a cold front that is expected to move through the region in the afternoon. These storms could be capable of producing heavy rain, 90 kilometre an hour winds, and toonie sized hail.

"Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads," the national weather agency said in a statement.

Anyone who is outside is advised to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

The stormy conditions will clear out of the area by early evening.
