Man arrested after hours-long standoff with St. Thomas police

Assault and mischief charges have been laid after a police investigation that kept some residents in southeast St. Thomas inside for several hours.

Police were called to the area of Harlequin Court and Renaissance Drive for a family dispute early Wednesday evening. Neighbours in the area were advised to stay inside their homes as a precaution.

Officers remained on scene until roughly 11 p.m. when a man was taken into custody. No injuries were reported. The man was taken to hospital for an assessment as a precaution, police said.

Police have not released any details about the incident, other than to state that there was no risk to public safety.

A 32-year-old man has been charged with one count each of assault and mischief.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
