16-year-old charged in Highway 401 crash

A 16-year-old from Scarborough with no licence has been charged for allegedly taking off after crashing a vehicle in a construction zone on Highway 401 east of London.

Emergency crews were called to the single-vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes of the highway at Dorchester Road in Thames Centre around 2:30 p.m. on Monday. It was reported the vehicle had left the road and crashed into the ditch before the three people inside ran from the scene.

Middlesex OPP searched the area. Three teens were arrested at a nearby restaurant.

A 16-year-old is charged with careless driving, driving without a licence, possession of an identify document, and failure to remain at the scene of a crash. The accused has been released from custody with a future court date, police said.

Two 17-year-olds from Scarborough were also charged with underage possession of cannabis.

The names of the three people charged cannot be released due to their age.
