Ayr Beats Port Hope 4-1 in Schmalz Finals, Take 3-2 Lead

Rob Grant had two assists as the Ayr Centennials beat the Port Hope Panthers 4-1 Sunday in Game 5 of the Schmalz Cup Finals.

The series is now three games to two in favour of the Centennials with Game 6 scheduled for Wednesday night.  Ayr can clinch its second straight Schmalz Cup.

There was no scoring in the first period of the game, though both teams had a power play chance in the first 20 minutes of play.

The Panthers scored first in the second period, when Cameron Harris found the net on the power play at 11:56 gone in the frame.  That would be all the scoring for Port Hope in the game though, as the Centennials took over the game.  John Nay tied the game up less than three minutes later.  Riley Clipper put the game-winner in the goal a couple of minutes after that for a 2-1 Ayr lead after two period.

The Centennials scored two more goals in the middle of the third period, off the sticks of Alex Mutton and Jackson White.

Jackson Swindells stopped all but one of Port Hope's 37 shots in goal for Ayr.  Sheldon Calbury was pulled after the fourth Ayr goal was scored and was replaced in goal with Eric Jackson.  Together they had 18 saves out of 22 shots on goal.

Puck drop for Game 6 is set for 7:30pm Wednesday at North Dumfries.
