Harriston Flood Mapping Project Underway

Minto is going to spend $21,000 to update the flood plain mapping in Harriston.

The Maitland River flows through the middle of Harriston and the community has suffered a number of floods over the years. The potential for flooding places some severe restrictions on new development and the maps now being used are quite out of date.

Mayor George Bridge says new mapping could move some property out of the flood plain.

“If you’re trying to build anything, there is extra costs. If we can remove that out of the flood plain zone those costs will be reduced and we may have some more building,” says Bridge.
