Owen Sound Woman Loses Thousands In Emergency Scam

An Owen Sound Woman is out about $20,000 after a social networking encounter.

The woman befriended a man on Facebook she believed was from Alberta.

However, the man said he was out of the country and needed money to get home.

The 54-year-old victim sent the money in June and July of last year to locations in two other countries through Western Union.

The Canadian Anti Fraud Centre says the so called emergency scam is on the rise.

The woman reported the incident to police yesterday and the Criminal Investigation Branch will continue to investigate the matter.
