Palmerston Male Charged After Officers were Assaulted with Bicycle and Spit At

A 52-year-old Palmerston man has been charged after a cyclist assaulted two OPP officers with his bicycle, then spat in one officer's face.

An officer stopped a cyclist on Main Street in Palmerston at around 11am on Friday, asking the man to reconsider travelling on the roadway on his bicycle due to poor weather conditions.

After refusing to identify himself, police attempted to arrest the male. During the arrest, police say the suspect assaulted an officer with the bicycle.

A second officer arrived on scene and discovered a small amount of marijuana on the suspect. When the officer asked the male about the marijuana, he spat in an officer's face.

John Hietkamp is facing two counts of assaulting a police officer and one count of possession of marijuana.
