John Thompson resigned as chief late last year in order to take a job with the municipal recreation department.
He has agreed to continue on the job until a new chief can be hired.
Thompson says there are members of the volunteer fire department ready to step into the chief’s position.
SPS Board Chair Kelly Ash said the decision followed discussions with Acting Chief Mike Federico and aligns with practices at other police services.
