Area School Boards Optimistic About Teacher Contract Talks

The two largest school boards in midwestern Ontario are optimistic that local agreements will be reached with their high school teachers.

Avon Maitland District School Board Director of Education Ted Doherty says the negotiations are unique this time because issues like wages and benefits are being negotiated by the province, and the local boards and teacher's locals are dealing with local issues.

Doherty says it's a new process for both parties and both sides are feeling their way through the process. He adds their negotiations are going well.

Steve Blake, director of education for the Bluewater District School Board, also feels they are a long way from the possibility of a teachers' strike.

Blake says talks continue with their teacher representatives and the board is optimistic they'll reach an agreement.
